Professor Katherine Samaras
Professor Katherine Samaras is a senior staff endocrinologist at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney, Laboratory Head in Adipose Biology and Senior Faculty, Garvan Institute of Medical Research and founder and director of the Australian Centre for Metabolic Health.
With HIV colleagues at St Vincent's, she was part of the team that described the natural history of HIV-lipodystrophy and its metabolic complications. She continues to play an international role in the endocrine complications of HIV, contributing to textbooks and invited reviews on the area, including the HIV-endocrinology chapter for the US Endocrine Society's Endocrine Emergencies Textbook and the Australian Federal Department of Health's Guidelines on HIV Management.
Her clinical and research interests include obesity and diabetes prevention, spanning from early intervention in the susceptible, through to bariatric surgery and epigenetics.
